Meet the Peer Educators!

My true passion in life is to help others. I have always known that whatever great things I did in my life had to involve, in one way or the other the helping and uplifting of others. I think this desire has a lot to do with the fact that my first name, Alimatu, is a west African variation of the Muslim name ''Halimah''; which means ''humane''.

know there are many factors in a young teenager’s life that aid in negative outcomes however I also know to achieve dreams takes hard work and faith. I want to encourage young girls everywhere that they can achieve if they believe. And the more obstacles we overcome, the more powerful we grow to overcome greater obstacles.

I am very avid about empowering women, especially those who feel as if their dreams have been stolen from them. Alongside that, I enjoy being able to recreate hope in youth, especially if no else believed in them. There are many issues to be spoken of, many ideas to be developed, and more dreams to dream.

I want to help young women feel comfortable embracing their sexual identities. Even though I was routinely taught that premarital sex was “bad,” I came to know sex as something that can be very enjoyable and special, and I believe that no one should be made to feel guilty for desiring it. Understanding myself better now I know too that my sexuality is an important part of my identity.

I joined MySistahs because I wanted to raise awareness and empower youth, specifically young women of color, about the need for HIV prevention, as well as advocate for the direct involvement of young women of color in the process of employing and developing preventive HIV/AIDS programs, and increase their knowledge about reproductive health challenges.

I am layers and intersections of acquaintances, ideas, desires, and passions. I am the unresponsive expression of an abuse victim. I am the burning frustration of a youth’s experience and perspective being illegitimatized. I am the crippling confusion of a Latina growing up stabbed by stereotypes. I am also action. I am the self-love, and resiliency after abuses, oppressions, and false assertions.

I know the pressures that females face as we mature and how being a minority can sometimes add to those complications. It can be difficult to know where to turn when you face major life issues, but you don't have to face your problems alone. I’m here for you, to help you to find answers and to provide you with support.

I grew up in a household where I could not really talk about sexual issues. I had many questions and was confused about a number of issues. Being a peer educator allows me to help those who grew up in similar situations and have not outlet.
