Nicole*
Hi everyone! My name is Nicole. I am 23 years old and from Georgia. I am a recent college graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology. I have aspirations of furthering my education by obtaining a Masters degree in public health, focusing on health behavior and education as well as policy making. I hope to one day open a nonprofit organization for disadvantaged young black women and girls to mold them into leaders and activists for HIV/STI education and prevention, sexual and reproductive justice, gender-based violence, body image, and improving the images of black women in hip hop culture.
I like to read, write in my journal, play the violin, travel, shop, and daydream! I also like to volunteer. I especially enjoy working with young women on issues such as domestic violence, suicide prevention, eating disorders, self-esteem, and HIV and AIDS; and I am involved in several community service projects. I work with a small, volunteer-led grassroots nonprofit organization that is devoted to the health and well-being of young black women and girls by providing cutting-edge health, media literacy, and social justice education programming inspired by youth and hip hop culture. Nationally, I am a member of a nonprofit reproductive rights organization that does events, public speaking, and helps with the creation of new outreach and dissemination mechanisms to grassroots and national networks to educate young women on their sexual and reproductive rights. It empowers me with leadership skill development, confidence and networking opportunities. I currently am an intern at an organization, working with its peer education and community service program for teens between the ages of 15-18. I assist with the management of the program and with youth development. Being an intern really unites several loves of mine: receiving practical experience in public health education; gaining knowledge of adolescent health issues; and developing connections with the public health community while performing community service. I also participate in Advocates for Youth’s Young Women of Color Leadership Council focused on activism in HIV and STIs, pregnancy prevention, emergency contraception, and activism.
I am with MySistahs because I love peer education. I love to hear what people have to say. MySistahs attracted me because it is a unique community (very different from other websites) that deals with issues that are important to society and, especially, to young women of color. We as women of color are often overlooked, but MySistahs and Advocates for Youth are working to change that, to show that we are important, and to assert that these issues—HIV and AIDS, sexual and reproductive health, and overall well-being—are important in our communities. I also appreciate the fact that MySistahs is not just geared toward only one or two groups of color, but is geared to every group of color, promoting togetherness, pride, and mutual support.
Come talk to me! I am interested in you and in your questions about anything on sexual and reproductive health, HIV and AIDS, communicating with your partner, teen pregnancy, or how to volunteer and be a peer educator yourself. You are never alone in whatever life throws at you.
I hope to hear from you soon.......
