NatashaHello! Hola! Namaste!

My name is Natasha. I am of mixed race stemming from the Caribbean and North America. I am proud of my Cuban, African and Indian heritage and embrace each part that contributes to my unique culture. It has been hard growing up multi-racial, especially in a society that requires you to classify yourself on everything from applications to school standardized exams. Growing up multi-racial, I struggled with acceptance and overcame them by educating myself on just what it means to be a woman of color with a background in many cultures. I learned to embrace all that I am by learning about my heritage.

I am currently in college and will soon graduate with an International Affairs and Health focused degree. For the past year, I have been a volunteer for an international organization, where I educate youth around the world on public health issues such as HIV/AIDS, the importance of healthy mothers and babies, and pregnancy. Working with people from around the world has allowed me to have a unique view and approach to problem solving. I plan to become a physician who works with women of color in poverty, particularly women in areas with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS.

My goal as a MySistahs peer educator is to increase awareness of STIs, HIV/AIDS and to stress the importance of maternal health. I want to talk to you if you are struggling with your identity, being accepted at school, have questions about pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases or are curious how you can become involved with advocating for youth. I want to help shine light on topics that are often misunderstood and help guide you to answers. Knowledge is power and I am here to share what I have learned over the years with you!
